Why the Maiko World has Become a Hotbed of Crime and Harassment

I’ve already made a video right after it became viral, but on June 26th 2022 this was tweeted by a former maiko.

This may be erased from this world, but this is the reality of being a maiko. At the age of 16, I was forced to drink an excessive amount of alcohol and bathe together with my customer (I escaped as fast as I could). I would like you to reconsider whether this is really a “traditional culture.” The photo shows the time when I won a Yamazaki 18-year whisky drinking contest with a customer.

In the last video, I rushed to shoot a video to avoid all the maiko and the Hanamachi cities being attacked and condemned. I would like to once again explain in more detail what exactly are the problems with the maiko world.

So today, I will first explain how young girls become and work as maiko. Next, I would like to summarize the problems in the world of maiko that were exposed this time. Finally, in light of these issues, as a person who lives in Kyoto and is engaged in traditional culture, I would like to share my personal opinions with you.

However I must make one thing very clear. Although I live in Kyoto and have worked with a few maiko and geiko before, I am not a person who has actually worked directly in their business world. Please understand that the content of this video is based on articles written by professors, licensed social workers, and stories I’ve heard from my friends who were formerly maiko. I have no intentions of attacking any individuals or organizations.
