It’s never an easy task and an absolute last resort for me, but when do you know if it’s the right time to let someone go?
Most people who need to go, it’s usually from their own poor choices.
Anyone who is a habitual liar needs to go. Anyone that is subversive to the culture and mission of the company most likely needs to go.
I have a hard time believing anyone takes pleasure out of firing or letting someone go.
From personal experience, it is always painful to me, no matter the circumstances.
Hire slowly, fire faster has always been accurate.
Here’s what I mean.
When you shortcut your hiring process or go on gut feeling, it’s usually when you have personnel problems.
Take your time and interview prospective employees 2-3 times, and verify references to ensure the people you’re on-boarding are absolutely the right people.
And if they become a problem, you shouldn’t hesitate to do what’s necessary to protect your other employees.
As I have always said, your people are one of your two most precious assets.
