What a return of the Marcos family could mean for the Philippines | DW News

Today's election in the Philippines has a clear favorite: Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Junior. Yet the Marcos name is synonymous with corruption and human rights abuses.
The family of the former Philippine dictator has worked steadily on its comeback over the past decades. And so Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. could soon follow in his infamous father's footsteps. One reason for this is the ever-widening gap between rich and poor.
In 2020, the Philippines saw the worst recession in more than 50 years. GDP growth fell by almost 10 points year-on-year. Now, the economy is slowly recovering. In 2021, it grew by 5.6 percent compared to the disastrous year before.
The hugely important tourism sector has particularly been hit - to date, many holidaymakers are staying away.
The result is that companies shut down, incomes drop, unemployment and inflation have risen sharply. In addition, the state's debt has grown because of high costs to combat the pandemic.
