Vaughn Roycroft and Redefining Success

Published
Fantasy author Vaughn Roycroft’s journey to publication took nearly 20 years, but his recent debut release, The Severing Son, has been receiving glowing reader and critic reviews.

Vaughn’s journey and eventual decision to self-publish is an inspiring story that shows how reframing the way authors think of their careers can make the difference between one that is pleasurable and long-lasting, and one that may leave writers discouraged and even ready to give up.

In this interview Vaughn talks about his love of Tolkien that inspired him to want to write similar stories, giving up that dream while he built his own lumber wholesale business, then selling it and rededicating himself to his writing.

He shares how he revised his initial draft—at 500K words!—on his own and with developmental editors to find the soul of the story he wanted to tell (12:10).

How deciding to self-publish grew out of shifting his priorities and values (20:41).

How he overcame the challenges of self-publishing and how it helped him grow in confidence as a writer (24:54).

How being involved in the writing and book community gave his debut a boost (33:55).

Getting to where you feel like an expert on your own writing and finding your own path (42:22).
