In the nearly 60 years since the release of the original Rolex Daytona in 1963, Rolex’s signature chronograph has become arguably the world’s most sought-after chronograph. Coming in a stunning 18k white gold case, this special Rolex Daytona 116509 came to the fore in the collection of John Mayer, and features a beautiful, and sporty, blue dial. Red accents throughout tie the whole look together and offer a rare and exciting pop of contrast to this spectacular example.

Out of the gate, the Daytona found a niche in the world of automobile racing, becoming a favorite of race car drivers, crew members, and other motorsports enthusiasts, and could be spotted on the wrists of gentleman drivers like Paul Newman. Its status as a favorite watch in the racing world did not translate to mass appeal, with stories of Daytona’s being sold drastically under retail to disinterested customers.

It wasn’t until the Daytona’s landmark 1988 redesign that the (then) most complicated Rolex sports watch took its place alongside the Submariner and the GMT Master at the apex of the Rolex catalog. That year brought all of the features that define today’s Rolex Daytona including a 40mm case, sapphire crystal, an external metal tachymetre bezel, screw-down crowns, 100-meter water resistance, COSC Swiss chronometer certification, and automatic winding. The introduction of gem set and precious metal variants only served to cement the Daytonas position as the Rolex to have.

Befitting its status as a the ultimate sports watch, the Rolex Daytona impresses with 100-meter water resistance. Within its 18k white gold case, Rolex caliber 4130 is an automatic movement that boasts a true 72-hour power reserve. A COSC certification is backed with rigorous in-house testing of the fully assembled watch; Rolex declares that all “Superlative” chronometers labeled as such will vary by less than two seconds per 24 hours. Additional refinements of caliber 4130 include a vertical clutch with column wheel, Breguet overcoil hairspring, antimagnetic qualities, and hacking seconds.
