Robots & Automation: A Solution to Labour Shortage Crises? - WU Vienna

Published
Are robots taking our jobs? Or are we facing a labor shortage in the future due to demographic developments? Klaus Prettner argues for a new theoretical approach. He shows that countries with particularly low population growth also have the highest density of industrial robots per worker. Every one percent decrease in population growth increases the growth in robot density by two percent. So the labor shortage leads to higher investment in automation, which in turn is necessary to at least partially compensate for the labor shortage. In this respect, automation contributes to the solution of a problem and need not be seen as a problem in itself.
