As his 2022 contract expiry looms closer, speculation over where Boubacar Kamara will be playing his football next season grows. And while his reserved passing style doesn’t particularly suit ‘Rangnick Ball’, he boasts traits which would bode well at Man Utd amid links to a cut-price January move or free transfer in July.

Under Jorge Sampaoli at Marseille this season, Kamara has thrived in a double pivot, and his first touch, composure on the ball and range of passing help him dictate the tempo of games as his side’s pivot point.

The 22-year-old often drops back as the more defensive midfielder to play short passes and allow his centre-backs or midfield partner to progress the ball, which would benefit the likes of Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay or Fred.

Off the ball, he often showcases eye-catching tenacity and has been successful with 37.8% of his pressures over the last year, ranking him in the top 2% of midfielders in Europe’s Big 5 Leagues.

His hard tackling ability also makes impressive reading, ranking in the 89th percentile for dribblers tackled (44.3%) and 83rd percentile for tackles won (1.92 per 90).

Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t getting any younger, while Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial are unlikely to remain at Old Trafford beyond next summer, so United will need a reliable source of goals in the centre of the attack.

Dusan Vlahovic has taken European football by storm over the past two seasons, making global headlines with his intimidating 6ft3 frame and prolific goalscoring tendencies at Fiorentina.

Only Robert Lewandowski (19) has scored more goals than Vlahovic (16) in Europe’s Top 5 Leagues this season, and the 21-year-old has matched Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of the most Serie A goals in a calendar year (33) in 2021.

Fiorentina could soon be looking to cash in on their Serbian superstar, who has no intention to extend his contract at the club, so he could be a blockbuster alternative to Erling Haaland for many of Europe’s top outfits next summer.

Another option could be Amadou Haidara. Haidara is a versatile player. His favoured position is in central midfield as a box to box player but he’s also been used as a more defensive ball winner as well as in wing back and full back roles on both flanks. He’s a classic Red Bull midfielder. His energy and work rate are his standout attributes but he backs his physical attributes up with impressive technicals showcased by a good: first touch, short passing range and close control. He’s very neat in possession and likes to keep his passes on the ground. Combine this with a good level of intelligence and Haidara is excellent at keeping the ball moving with quick, crisp passes. He’s great at finding space to receive progressive passes, notably making runs from central spaces to out wide.

Having played the high intensity, Red Bull style of football for all of his professional career, Haidara is a tenacious ball winner. His energy and work rate allow him to get about the pitch for 90 minutes and his tenacity means he’s very happy to put in tackles, but he does his best work in the two highest thirds. Haidara is also very tactically aware. When his side is in possession he’s more than happy to move around to pull players out of position. He’s also not stupid with the ball and he tends to keep things very simple, which isn’t a bad thing. His goal against Manchester United in the 20/21 Champions League was testament to his tactical awareness and patience in possession.
