We are used to large, public outpouring of emotion when members of the royal family die, but the passing of the Queen is altogether different in magnitude. Some people find it incredibly distressing, others feel nothing at all. Do collective, public acts of mourning - such as laying flowers and signing books of condolences - help? Why does the death of somebody whom most of us have never even met have the capacity to cause such distress? How can we, individually and as a nation, process it - especially at a time that so many of us are still struggling with losses of all kinds following the pandemic?
