Ontario education workers strike: Thousands rally across Ontario as "illegal" job action begins

Published
Thousands of Ontario education workers and union supporters hit picket lines across the province Friday, honking noisemakers, waving flags and chanting “stand up, fight back,” on the first day of an indefinite walkout that’s shut many schools.

Members of other unions — including the Ontario Public Service Employees Union and Unifor — joined The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) members on the picket lines, which stretched from Toronto's legislature to outside of Education Minister Stephen Lecce's office in King City, Ont.

Ontario’s government has asked the province’s labour relations board to declare the walkout by education workers illegal and actions by union leaders unlawful, while seeking to have any strike activity ceased.

CUPE, which represents the 55,000 education workers who walked off the job, has said the action will continue indefinitely.
