NHS Trust launches multiple reviews following Newsnight investigation into 'mafia-like' leadership

Published
A recent Newsnight investigation uncovered what whistleblowers described as a 'mafia-like' leadership at one of England’s biggest and worst performing hospital trusts, University Hospitals Birmingham.

We were told by current and former clinicians there of a 'punitive culture' which allegedly frightens staff from raising concerns about patient safety.

In the wake of our reports, three separate reviews have now been announced by the NHS trust, which serves two million patients across four Birmingham hospitals. Politicians are now calling for an independent inquiry similar to that of the Mid-Staffs scandal.

A spokesperson for University Hospitals Birmingham said: “We welcome the support that is being put in place and we look forward to working positively and constructively with our NHS colleagues.

“This will build upon the work already underway across UHB to understand the issues that have been highlighted. It is very clear that there is a strength of feeling in a number of areas and we are committed to addressing these."
