The government will be passing new law which will give employees the right to request flexible working from Day 1.
Flexible working doesn’t just mean choosing between whether you want to work at home or in the office – it also means employees making use of job-sharing, flexitime, and working compressed, annualised, or staggered hours.
If an employer cannot accommodate a request to work flexibly, they will be required to discuss alternative options before they can reject the request.
The new law also reduces the timeframe from 3 months to 2 months, for employers to respond to any request for flexible working.
Some key definitions:
-Staggered hours means having different shift patterns. I.e different start, finish and break times than other employees.
-Compressed hours means working your contracted hours over less working days.
-Annualised hours is where the employees working hours and pay are calculated over a standard year as opposed to weekly. There is generally a flexibility as to when the hours are worked.
