McGeorge School of Law 48th Annual Top Oral Advocate Competition 2021-2022

Published
The 48th Annual Final Four Top Oral Advocate Competition took place on Thursday, April 7, 2022. Our esteemed panel of judges for this year’s event were Judge Consuelo Callahan of the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, Justice Arthur G. Scotland of the California Third District Court of Appeals, and the Honorable Kevin R. Culhane of the Sacramento Superior Court.

This year’s case involves a former medical professor at a public university who claims the university violated his First Amendment free speech rights and his Fourteenth Amendment due process rights when it fired him in retaliation for a blog entry he posted on his non-university-hosted website.

Second-year law students John Gutierrez, Allison Ornelaz, Heather Mills, and Kathryn Lerseth competed in the competition. Katie Lerseth received the award for Top Oral Advocate. Appellant Brief Awards were earned by Kelsey Thweatt, and Thomas Gherini, and Appellee Brief Awards were earned by Angela Fuentes and Dylan Musgrove.
