Know Your Rights: Civil Rights, Employment Discrimination, Banking, and Immigration

Published
On Thursday, February 10 NIAC Colorado hosted an expert panel examining issues that directly impact the Iranian-American and the broader Middle Eastern/North African community: civil rights, employment discrimination, immigration, and banking.

As many Iranian-Americans face discrimination at work and find their bank accounts frozen on account of US sanctions, the goal of this panel was to educate immigrants and concerned citizens about their rights, and answer any questions they may have. Some questions focusing this discussion were: For what issues should I quickly seek legal assistance? What do I do if I'm initially offered employment, but upon learning that I'm Iranian (or of another ethnicity on our sanctions list) the employer rescinds the offer? What do I do if I know somebody with a valid student visa who was deported? What do I do if my bank account is frozen, presumably on account of sanctions?

Our special guests included Omeed Azmoudeh and Qusair Mohamedbhai from Rathod | Mohamedbhai LLC as well as Christine Hernández from Hernández and Associates, LLC. NIAC Colorado Leadership Council member Shadi Kafi moderated this panel of attorneys.
