On November 9, 2010 Howard Knipp sat down at his home in Fort Collins, CO and told of his experiences in World War II. Howard, raised in Napoleon, OH, served in the US Navy. He enlisted in the National Guard while in high school and served out his enlistment. After a break, he and a buddy enlisted in the Navy. Howard was assigned to the USS Rigel (AR-11). He later transferred to the USS Fletcher (DD-445), where he was involved in fire control. He sailed throughout the Pacific and served on the ship during 13 of the 15 battle stars the ship was awarded. He then transferred to Washington for advance training and was there when the war ended. Howard and his lovely wife Verne were married for almost 40 years until her passing. They have five children, 13 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
