How to Prepare for Your Employee Review

Published
Employee review time can be extremely stressful for leaders. Finding the right balance where they can authentically reward and honor the hard work of their teams, while also navigating financial restraints and the need to provide data and feedback to help them grow can be challenging.

It can also be stressful for the team members. Most are asked to complete a self-review which can feel like a tightrope between bragging vs being overlooked for raises or promotions.

Add to this that research shows that most people overestimate how hard they work (and possibly the value they add) by at least 10%. It’s not intentional - it’s just how we’re wired. But it means we possibly lack objectivity in a self review and that can leave us feeling offended or overlooked.

Emotions run high on both sides of the equation during this time of the year.

While we can’t take all emotion or stress out of the review system, the simple bucket list system that I talk about in the video below can certainly help all involved improve objectivity and see other perspectives. And that’s an important way to begin.

Give it a try and let me know what you think!
