While at least 50 positions were cut in engineering at the Sunnyvale, California office, many of these roles will be filled in Mexico and India, as indicated by internal documents obtained by CNBC.

The layoffs were communicated by Asim Husain, the vice president of Google Developer Ecosystem, who highlighted the company's intention to maintain a global presence while expanding in strategic growth locations to operate closer to partners and developer communities. This move aligns with Alphabet's ongoing efforts to streamline operations and enhance efficiency, with previous reductions announced in various departments since early last year.

The reorganization also reflects Google's focus on building teams in key markets like India and Brazil to optimize costs and improve proximity to users. Despite these changes, Google continues to experience robust growth, as evidenced by its recent first-quarter revenue surge and strategic initiatives like the introduction of generative AI models.
