Equal Care and Equal Pay | It is high time to close the gaps!

In Germany, the share of unpaid care work performed by women is particularly high in a European comparison. The same applies to the wage gap. Both are two sides of the same coin. There are many causes for this. The pandemic has led to women doing even more unpaid care work. The result is an extremely high percentage of women working part-time (almost 50% of all employed women), the consolidation of role stereotypes - which, as before, also affect the choice of occupation and field of study, lower pay, and poor career opportunities. In addition, typical women's occupations are less valued and even full-time employment does not lead to poverty-proof pensions (17% of all full-time employed women in Germany earn less than €2000 per month).

The pandemic has pushed far more women out of the labor market than men. Women are estimated to have lost at least $800 billion in income worldwide by 2020, according to Oxfam's latest inequality report. It goes on to say that unpaid care work , which was already shouldered to a disproportionately higher extent by women and girls before the pandemic, has increased significantly: "The contribution of women’s unpaid care work to the economy is huge. Oxfam has calculated that this work adds value to the economy of at least $10.8 trillion."

Another generation of women will have to wait for gender equality, according to the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report 2021: As the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic continues to be felt, closing the global gender gap has stretched from 99.5 years to 135.6 years. When economic equality is considered, the figure is as high as 268 years. It is estimated that the pandemic will put 47 million more women and girls below the poverty line, reversing decades of progress in eradicating extreme poverty, according to UN Women.
