Columbus City Council Meeting Highlights:

• PROTECTING FREELANCE WORKERS IN COLUMBUS: Council President Pro Tem Rob Dorans, is sponsoring Ordinance 1016-2023 to enacts a new chapter of City Code to provide protections for freelance workers in Columbus. According to the Upwork Freelance Forward 2022 report, nearly 40% of the U.S. workforce is engaged in freelance work as of 2022. Every year, 50% of freelance workers struggle to collect payment. Seventy-one percent of freelancers will struggle to collect payment at least once over the course of their career. These changes to the Columbus City Codes will require contracts to be in place for freelance work representing more than $250 of work. New codes will also require clients to pay freelancers paid in full and in a timely manner, and give freelancers a course of action if these agreements are not honored.

• CELEBRATING NATIONAL SMALL BUSINESS WEEK: Councilmember Nick Bankston is sponsoring Resolution 0082X-2023 to recognize and celebrate National Small Business Week. National Small Business Week is celebrated during the first week of May every year. This week, entrepreneurs will be honored across the country for contribution in bringing new ideas to life and growing our economy. There are approximately 122,000 small businesses in the City of Columbus, of which about 26,000 are minority-owned. Columbus’ economic success is directly tied to the success and vibrancy of our small businesses community.

• SUPPORTING MORE ACCESSIBLE GREEN PROJECTS FOR ALL COMMUNITIES: As Earth Month comes to a close, Councilmember Emmanuel Remy, chair of the Environment Committee, is sponsoring Ordinance 1257-2023, to support Green Columbus' Urban Tree Nursery initiative and Earth Day 2023. Green Columbus aims to empower all neighbors to help make their community more "green." During the month of April, the nonprofit provided more than 100 community worksites with tools, soil, mulch, seed mix, trees, and more.
