ARCHIVES: The search for survivors during the 1982 Alpine Meadows avalanche

In March 1982, a month of snow hit the Sierra and several resorts were forced to shut down. On March 31, an avalanche barreled down Alpine Meadows.

Eight people were eventually recovered from the avalanche. Only one person survived after being buried for five days.
