Orthodontists are dental specialists who straighten crooked teeth by applying braces and other appliances. Orthodontic assistants help these medical professionals by performing clerical tasks in the office and providing patient care, although their specific duties vary by state and office. Because patient health and safety is involved, assistants must meet specific requirements, some of which are mandated by states. Although a state may not have specific requirements for orthodontic assistants, many employers demand postsecondary training for the position. Most programs, which are available from technical schools, take only a year to complete and award a certificate or diploma. Two-year programs, which are found in community colleges, can lead to an associate degree and offer a broader perspective on the profession. Requirements for admission to such programs include a high-school diploma, vaccinations against tetanus and hepatitis B, and pre-requisite courses in first aid, math and computers. Some states require certification and a license, although qualifications vary by location.
