It is just Tim Urban talking about himself and I could just relate to him with every sentence.

I believe knowing how something works is the starting point of even coming up with systems to prevent being trapped by the thing. This talk does exactly that. One of the things preventing you from managing your time effectively is distractions. It is easy to drift off into another world, in another time while working on something. To add to this, high-stress situations can seriously affect productivity. She talks about how stress can affect our attention and how to deal with it.

The breadth of research behind every sentence in this talk is just fascinating. A wandering mind can affect your ability to focus on something or even start something.

This talk can serve as a jumping-off point to start to mend this. An app like Headspace can be a good tool to look into to learn about mindfulness. Andy Puddicombe also addresses the issue of being distracted by thoughts. Distraction is one of the big things keeping you from hitting deadlines or even starting to work on something.

This barrage of thoughts also leads to stress which again keeps you from being in control of your time. To gain control of your time, you also need to know how to control your attention and thoughts. This is also accompanied by busting some common perceptions people might have. Andy Puddicombe talks about the 10 minutes of Mindfulness in his book as well. Tim Harford talks about slow-motion multitasking as opposed to what we usually think multitasking to be.

It does however involve switching gears in a way that reduces boredom and overwhelm. This would be a really nuanced line to walk on which would require a lot of premeditation. Stefan Sagmeister cites anecdotal cases to emphasize the importance of taking time off. He talks about his experience of taking sabbaticals. He talks about detaching from work for a while which made him more appreciative of his work.

It also brought about ideas that the company worked on for years after his sabbatical. The sabbatical also made him more financially successful because of improved quality. Taking long sabbaticals might not be practical for everyone but taking breaks can definitely help people get some perspective. This is also one of the reasons the Pomodoro Technique emphasizes on taking breaks. Stefan Sagmeister does not espouse anything, neither does he compel you to follow him.

He just talks about his experience of taking time off as a designer.
