Contact with exposed power lines or electrical wiring can result in electrocution and associated second- or third-degree burns. Poor operating techniques may cause a grader to tip over, injuring or crushing the operator or others in the immediate vicinity.

Reg has worked on northern BC roads and highways for 46 years — first as a surveyor and then in road maintenance. Has it changed a lot? A grader smooths out the road surface by using a large blade located under the machine to scrape out ruts and remove potholes. In the wintertime, the blade pushes the snow off the road; and because the grader is less bulky and has a smaller blade [than a plow truck], it can do jobs that require more finesse like clearing turnarounds and pushing drifts back.

On the surface, many contractors would say they would prefer a seasoned, experienced motor grader operator over a young buck with mastery of machine control systems. But with motor graders considered to be one of the more difficult machines to operate in construction, experienced operators are worth their weight in gold.
