When I was an undergraduate English major at Wright State University, I was recruited by a mechanical engineering professor who had a really successful and prolific graduate research group, many of whom were non-native English speakers because they were international graduate students. I was embedded in that group for a few years and I learned informally a lot of the genres of technical writing, and how to find my way in this really unfamiliar landscape of STEM.

English majors take small classes with dynamic and engaged faculty, who specialize in a range of fields, genres, historical periods, and critical perspectives. As an English major, you will study the language and form of the stories we tell—whether they appear in poetry, plays, novels, memoirs, films or video games—and consider both the overpowering and understated emotions, epic and petty conflicts, heroic and banal acts, and the grand and simple language that offer the widest range of understanding who we are.

Students will find the English major focuses on personal, social, and cultural concerns that are central to the goals of an undergraduate education, that enhance their personal growth, and that prepare them for responsible participation as citizens in a democracy.

Students will also find a strong grounding for continued study in graduate school as well as valuable preparation for those professions and professional schools — for example, law, medicine, business — that require critical thinking, interpretive sophistication, awareness of cultural issues, and effective speaking and writing. The English major prepares students for many different kinds of jobs.

It offers an intellectually enriching preparation for entry-level positions in a variety of careers and provides students with a strong foundation for graduate work in law, education, business, and medicine. There are lots of ways to find good keywords to help your job or internship search process, or even just to learn more about the types of jobs you can do within a specific major. This is the individual in charge of coordinating the major program or department as a whole. Careers After an English Major

By the time I entered college, I realized that becoming Indiana Jones was not a fully viable career path. For me, that meant an English major with a Communication minor where I could feed my curiosity through reading and writing and hone skills in various types of storytelling. I wrote literary analyses, learned about the development of language, wrote creatively, and worked for the university newspaper. Eventually, I went on to my PhD program at the University of Texas Arlington, and I now work as a professor at Aurora University, teaching, writing, and researching things I love and find meaningful. One day is never like the next. About half of English majors nationally double major in secondary education and go on to teach in high schools, and the other half go into diverse careers, such as writing, editing, law, library sciences, teaching, marketing, and non-profits. At AU, our recent graduates have regularly gone on to succeed in many of these careers.

Career Opportunities for English Majors. In a recent survey of English department graduates we asked a number of questions regarding career choices. We also asked what skills our past students learned in their classes that helped them in those careers. The responses indicated that skills in writing and communication were most often used in the work place. Analytical skills were also used quite often and in a variety of ways. The study of literature, although necessary for teaching and research, has given many students greater insights while pursuing other careers and a better understanding of the world in general. English majors are requested for many jobs, from computer software companies to the Park Service and from law enforcement to lobbying.
