Quantitative ecology


Understanding, predicting and controlling animal movement is a fundamental problem of conservation and management ecology. The need to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts, such as crop raiding by large herbivores, is becoming increasingly urgent. Because of the substantial costs or the possibility of unsuitable outcomes on wildlife, managers are often encouraged to deploy interventions that can achieve their objective while minimizing the impact on animal populations. We propose an adaptive management framework that can identify cost-effective solutions to reduce human-wildlife conflicts, while also minimizing constraints on animal movement and distribution. We focus on conflicts involving animals for which conflict zones occupy only a portion of their home-range. The adaptive management approach includes four basic steps: define and spatialize conflict areas, predict animal distribution from functional connectivity and patch residency time, predict the impact of management actions on animal distribution, and test predictions and revise predictive models.

The ecologist will work on a range of projects relating to renewable energy development and the effects of anthropogenic activities on wildlife. Quantitative Ecology/Ethnoecology

Ten courses provided in the module sum up to 49 credits , whereas Master students need 18 credits altogether the PhD students even less, according to Erasmus agreements. Students, therefore, will have some freedom to select those courses they will be more interested in and even select other courses available in the program of our Faculty. Finally note that students can also work on their own research project, in collaboration with some of the lecturers of the course, and they will also receive credits for this activity. The course covers basics of experimental design emphasizing experiments in the field , including various nested designs and their statistical evaluation using various univariate methods general linear models , and finally analysis of species composition by multivariate methods using CANOCO. The ability to analyze real data is emphasized.

STUB – Statistical Thinking in Undergraduate Biology

This book presents an integrative approach tomathematical and statistical modelling in ecology and evolutionary biology. After an introductory chapter, the book devotes one chapter for movement ecology, one for population ecology, one for community ecology, and one for genetics and evolutionary ecology. Each chapter starts with a conceptual section, which provides the necessary biological background and motivates the modelling approaches. The next three sections present mathematical modelling approaches, followed by one section devoted to statistical approaches. Quantitative Ecological Theory

NMBU has a special responsibility for research and education that ensures the basis of life for future generations. NMBU has employees and students and is organized in seven faculties. Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management MINA at Norwegian University of Life Sciences NMBU has a vacant 3-year PhD position in applied quantitative ecology, focusing on how tropical forest mammals use time as indicated by an unprecedented availability of systematic camera trap data from multiple sites and years across the tropics. The focus will be on analysis of pre-existing data rather than collecting field data. The overall project, based on an extensive international collaboration, aims to improve understanding and prediction of species vulnerabilities to extinction through a rigorous evaluation of pre-existing data that includes millions of camera trap images and other systematic compilations. The component undertaken by the successful candidate focuses on animal activity patterns.


Quantitative Ecology and Evolutionary Biology: Integrating models with data

There are few areas of modern ecology that do not rely heavily on quantitative methods! Ecological modelling and data management are rapidly expanding sub-disciplines of ecology, and so the group helps its members obtain advice, learn, apply good practice and collaborate. Ecologists are increasingly in need of quantitative skills and the British Ecological Society Quantitative Ecology Special Interest Group QE SIG aims to support skills development, sharing of good practice and highlighting novel methods development within quantitative ecology. Students receive intensive training in the application of statistical, mathematical, and decision sciences to terrestrial and aquatic ecology, natural resource management, biometrics, and mathematical biology.
