Changing the apprenticeship landscape


Modern Apprenticeships offer anyone aged over 16 paid employment combined with the opportunity to train for jobs across a wide range of sectors. They are an exciting way of gaining skills and qualifications that will help to start a career without having to study full time. All the Modern Apprenticeship frameworks are developed by the appropriate sector skills council in consultation with their industry. Modern Apprenticeship frameworks can also be used as the basis for training more established employees.

Here at Moray College UHI we offer a range of Modern Apprenticeships across a range of sectors and work closely with a number of employers within the Highlands and Islands areas. It covers areas such as: co-ordinating the planting of crops or plants, the management of planted areas, promoting health, safety and security, managing resources, and identifying and naming plants using their botanical names.

Designed in partnership with the Sector Skills Council Lantra, this SVQ gives learners an internationally recognised qualification that guarantees they have the skills, knowledge and abilities to carry out their role successfully. Individuals who are currently in employment and who wish to obtain a formal qualification and employees who wish to obtain short, continuing professional development courses. The good news is that depending on your personal circumstances there are a wide range of bursaries, grants and allowances available to fund your college studies.

Funding from Skills Development Scotland to contribute towards the cost of the apprentices training under the Modern Apprenticeship programme is available for all young people aged 16 — 19 for all frameworks.

Horticulture or landscape operatives can be employed to work in public parks and gardens, green spaces and historic gardens, private gardens and estates. Many businesses will be specialised in their activities, such as grounds maintenance soft-landscape or landscape construction hard-landscape. Soft- landscaping includes the establishment and maintenance of plants and cultivated areas. Hard-landscaping includes establishment of hard surfaces and structures in addition to the establishment of plants in cultivated areas. The distinct nature of these two specialisms means very few businesses can offer the full breadth of skills and therefore two options are available for this occupation;. The employment area will dictate the option pursued.


Landscape-Horticulturist - Apprenticeship and Occupational Certification

This apprenticeship program is designed to provide individuals working in the industry, who want to pursue a career in horticulture, with theoretical principles and practical trade skills developed by industry to become a recognized horticultural technician. If you are considering a future as a Horticultural Technician, you may work with green infrastructure on private, commercial or government properties. Opportunities exist in all parts of the industry from production and maintenance to landscape installation, retail and supply firms. Graduates may also become self-employed. Landscape Management Technician Apprenticeship

They create and modify landscapes by measuring, designing, and interpreting plans. They construct and maintain gardens, parks, golf courses and other landscape environments. Landscape horticulturists install and maintain hard landscape elements such as retaining walls, patios, walkways and water features. In addition, they advise clients on issues related to horticulture and landscape construction. They are employed by landscape designers, architects and contractors, lawn service and tree care establishments, recreation facilities, golf courses, parks, nurseries, greenhouses, and municipal, provincial and federal governments.

We currently design , build and maintain commercial and Domestic gardens. We are looking for someone who would want to learn to run a small team and be in charge of projects.

Landscape horticulturists, in consultation with clients, work with other trades to carry out landscaping operations and design in a variety of environments. This includes residential, commercial and public grounds, playgrounds, golf courses, garden centres, tree nurseries, greenhouses and interior landscapes. Landscape horticulturists work with machinery and equipment ranging from simple hand tools such as pruning shears and sprayers to heavy-duty trucks, tractors, loaders and graders. They may be responsible for the routine maintenance of equipment.
