When the Erie Bureau of Police's new auto theft detective starts work on July 1, that person will have in hand detailed information concerning thefts and stolen vehicle recoveries to assist in theft investigations.

That data, which is being generated by an intelligence analyst, highlights one of the ways the bureau's leadership says its newest civilian employee will aid in revealing crime trends and working criminal investigations not just in the city, but those cases worked by task forces tackling more serious crimes in the region, including drugs and gun violence. The analyst began working full-time in mid-May after starting part-time in early April. He is being paid through a one-year grant that Erie received in through the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency.

Erie police are not identifying the analyst, Police Chief Dan Spizarny said it is for security reasons, based on the analyst's work for the city and the information he is developing for task forces involving federal, state, county and local law enforcement.

Officials said only that the analyst has undergraduate degrees in criminal justice and psychology and a master's degree in applied intelligence. Spizarny said when the receipt of the PCCD grant was announced in September that the analyst would have access to Erie police information to use in looking for crime trends.

The information the analyst generates would help address problems, aid investigations and support initiatives including the Erie Law Enforcement Crime Task Force-Gun Working Group and the Unified Erie community-based crime reduction project. Erie gets crime analyst: Erie police to hire civilian intelligence analyst. He noted that, according to a U. Spizarny said the analyst gives Erie police a full-time, non-uniformed person to work on intelligence. The bureau's former intelligence officer, Lt.

Pete Mitchell, had other duties, he said. The bulk of the analyst's work so far has been in getting trained on all of the city police bureau's software, records management and field-based reporting systems, said Mitchell, who now serves as the analyst's supervisor. There was also some software that came with the grant that the analyst also had to be trained on, he said.

The analyst is now working on tasks that include helping with the bureau's daily crime incident reports and generating information from those reports to aid detectives investigating various crimes and inform patrol officers about matters such as officer safety issues, Deputy Chief Rick Lorah said.

He is also generating data that will be used in specialized investigations, such as those handled by the bureau's auto theft detective, once that newly-created position is filled and the detective starts work on July 1. The data will include where vehicles were stolen and where they were recovered to see if there are any patterns that might be occurring, according to Spizarny. Erie police target auto theft: Grant to fund full-time Erie police detective, creation of task force to combat auto theft.

The analyst is additionally gathering information on domestic violence calls in the city. Spizarny said those calls increased from an average of about 16 a day in to about 17 in He said police are monitoring those incidents, and the analyst is providing information to give officers a better idea of what is happening.

He said officials would also search for additional funding in hopes of making the position permanent. Contact Tim Hahn at thahn timesnews.
