Apprenticeship


Apprenticeships are a way of developing new staff and providing new skills for existing staff by studying and learning through work. Employers can benefit from the development of skills relevant to the organisation as well as improved productivity and a better quality of service.

Apprenticeships must run for a minimum of 12 months, provide opportunity to learn whilst at work and time to learn away from work and be independently assessed at the end. Apprenticeship Standards – Cogent Skills

Visit our new resource hub to access useful guides and find out how employers can access incentive payments for hiring an apprentice. End-point assessment EPA is the final stage of an apprenticeship. It is an impartial assessment of whether your apprentice has developed the skills, knowledge and behaviours outlined in the apprenticeship standard. Assessments are designed by employers in the sector and are conducted by independent bodies known as end-point assessment organisations EPAOs. It's important that you select an EPAO as early into the apprenticeship as possible, either directly or through your training provider, to ensure that your apprentice fully understands the assessment criteria and how they will be assessed. As well as successfully completing the EPA, your apprentice may need to complete several additional requirements before completion. This might include mandatory English and maths qualifications. Once all elements of the apprenticeship are completed, the apprentice will receive their apprenticeship certificate. An EPAO is separate from the employer and training provider to ensure that the assessment remains impartial. You can search for an EPAO using the online tool 'Find an end-point assessment organisation for your apprentice.

Apprenticeship standards

An apprenticeship standard sets out the skills, knowledge and behaviours required of apprentices. They also show what an apprentice will be doing in their day-to-day job role. Apprenticeship standards represented a shift from assessment to learning and put the employers in control by allowing them to map out a clear career path for an apprentice based on the skills and knowledge required in particular industries. Apprentices must also undertake an independent assessment at the end of their training to demonstrate their skills, knowledge and behaviours, ensuring this is in line with those outlined in the apprenticeship standard. There are separate apprenticeship standards for similar jobs, as even some job titles sound similar, the skills, knowledge and behaviours required will different. For example, the apprenticeship standard of Adult Care Worker is a Level 2 apprenticeship whereas the apprenticeship standard of Lead Adult Care Worker is a Level 3 apprenticeship.
