American Express is regularly lauded as one of the best companies to work for — particularly for its flexible schedules and workplace diversity, which extends to gender, race, and sexual and religious orientation. The company, headquartered in New York City, has 50, global employees, and that number is growing rapidly due to expansion of both onsite and remote positions.

Oriana Vogel, vice president of global talent acquisition, explains what she's looking for in new hires. What qualities do you look for in every candidate? Fun and stylish — and I don't just mean that in the fashion sense. We want people who like to be on the cutting edge of things in whatever they're doing. How often do you hire new people? We never stop hiring. We place about 18, roles a year throughout the company. About 60 percent of these are external hires. The remainder reflects internal movement.

What areas of the company are growing fastest? Our digital payment and technology areas are growing very rapidly. We are looking for coders, programmers, designers, developers, and engineers.

We are competing for the same type of talent you might think of going to eBay, Amazon, or Google. We are also continuously hiring customer care professionals for our service centers. Where are most of your jobs located?

Manhattan is our headquarters. However, a growing trend is that we are bringing on more and more virtual employees. How is the job different as a virtual employee? There is no one specific role for which we hire virtual employees. Jobs in marketing, technology, sales, and many other areas of the company can be done from home — including HR.

I am working from home right now. The growth in the virtual employee space has been so great that we have added a virtual employee section to our jobs listings. We value offering these types of jobs because it taps you into a much deeper and broader group of potential employees.

Instead of being limited to a commutable employee, you can find the best person for the role, no matter where they live. How many virtual employees do you have? While nearly 10 percent of American Express employees are in dedicated virtual roles, all employees can work directly with their leaders to determine the best work arrangement for their role.

Flexibility is a part of the way we work at American Express, and it's also expected in today's global marketplace. All employees are able to take advantage of some type of flexible work arrangement, such as telecommuting, flex days, or work from home. What do you expect candidates to know about the company before an interview? I love it when candidates show up and have done their homework on us. They know what our mission statement is and what's been happening in the press.

It's also helpful when candidates have looked at LinkedIn profiles of whomever they are interviewing with so they know the person a little more. Where do you recruit candidates? We source our online database quite a bit. Anyone can go to our website and create a profile and join the community of people interested in American Express. We're basically searching through candidates trying to find people before they find us. What is your etiquette on candidates interacting with you on social media?

Everyone has a different response to social media outreach. Some people won't accept a LinkedIn request unless they know the person, while others like to build their database with as many people as possible.

I'd say, if someone takes that tactic, there's no guarantee. What types of jobs are available for recent graduates? There are entry-level positions across the company, in areas such as technology, engineering, development, sales, marketing, finance, and customer care. Do you have an internship program?

We have a week summer program for undergraduate juniors and for MBA students. It's a paid program, and we help with the logistics of relocation if you are accepted.

We begin recruiting interns at the beginning of every academic year. We also have virtual recruiting strategies with business and engineering schools across the U. We engage with students primarily via webinars, social media, and telephone conference calls, which act more like coffee chats than formal interviews.

Do most full-time positions require a specific degree? There's no requirement that you have to have a certain degree for any job. What types of questions do you typically ask in an interview? We ask a lot of story-based questions. We want to understand what you have done and how it relates to the job you're considering. We'll ask you to describe an occasion when you came up with a creative way to improve a process or solve a problem.

I also like to hear about a time when you anticipated a potential problem and took action to prevent it. What's the best way to prepare for a job even before an opening is there? I don't think people grow up and think they want to work for a credit card company. So the best advice I can give to anyone is to figure out what you're passionate about and match that passion to the work that we do. Then use the resources we provide.

If you know anyone who works for American Express, talk to him or her about what it's like to work here and what he or she enjoys about their job.

What questions should candidates always ask in an interview? It's your job to sell us on your passion. I also need to understand that you know what the job is. That might seem obvious, but a lot of people come in unprepared.

I love questions from candidates that look to the future: "What do my first 90 days look like? What questions should they never ask? A mistake sometimes people make is saying how much they want to learn from us as opposed to positioning it about how much they have to provide us. There is a job opening because we have a business problem that needs to be solved. What can you do to help us solve it? Is it OK to bring up salary?

It's absolutely OK. The salary range is usually coordinated up front with the recruiter. What is the interview dress code? I think there are regional differences by office. New York is smart casual, and some of the other locations may be more casual. And it can vary depending on the role. So do your research about the job and the culture of the office you're visiting. How important are thank-you notes? I think it's really a nice touch. It's particularly helpful when it is specific to the conversation you had with each person.
