Year of Ecology in Russia
Our world is over-developed. Today, the damage to many of our ecosystems is a recognised fact — something must be done. This masters is your chance to play your role. The projects are often directly aligned with larger staff research projects. They may cover aspects of ecology, genetics, management, restoration, and conservation and could be laboratory or fieldbased.
Current projects include investigating greenhouse gas fluxes from wetlands, restoration of peatlands through the encouragement of sphagnum growth and improvement of urban grassland species richness. There may also be the possibility of carrying out your project overseas, for example, our field station in Ecuador provides numerous opportunities for project work. You'll study six core units, including a field course and an in-depth project dissertation.
Plus, you'll choose from a range of option units to tailor your learning. Currently you can choose between field courses to Ecuador cloud and rainforest , Tanzania Savannah and Highland forest and Poland Primeval forest.
This unit will introduce the techniques of data collection and analysis which are appropriate to your course. They will be a mix of standard but essential methods and more modern approaches based on new technology and bespoke methods of analysis. This unit focuses on conservation actions that aim to reverse declines in threatened species.
These include reintroductions of endangered or extinction species, ex-situ conservation breeding, post-release monitoring, habitat manipulation and biological control, and research underpinning knowledge of the causes decline and recovery priorities.
The unit will draw on case studies from the tropics, and from species recovery efforts for UK and European plants and animals. This is a research-led unit that provides an understanding of the science underpinning the restoration of habitats and species populations.
Using examples from a range of habitats and taxa, we will explore the rationale of restoration ecology, consider the potential scientific, political and legislative constraints on restoration, and apply ecological theory to evaluate the potential or success of restoration actions and schemes. This unit instructs you how to design specific studies and correctly interpret research output. It introduces a broad range of the statistical tools used by scientists, from formulating hypotheses, choosing the appropriate statistical test, and carrying it out and presenting the data ready for publication.
This unit allows you to undertake a novel research project appropriate to your programme of study and to practise your skills in research design, analysis, and scientific communication. We will provide an extensive list of projects in the field, laboratory and in the UK and overseas.
If you have your own project idea, we can help you develop it. Projects undertaken at a distance will normally be preceded by an intensive period of preparation and planning with the supervisor. Ecology and Conservation BSc (Hons)
This course explores core themes of conservation and biological diversity across both marine and terrestrial environments. There is a focus on habitat and survey species skills, applied management and conservation. There is a strong emphasis on applied and experiential learning. With fieldwork opportunities in each year of the course you investigate our rich local environment as well as overseas to destinations such as Portugal. There is also an optional international trip to South Africa where you study indigenous species and issues relating to habitat, species management and conservation. You will develop your practical skills in our specialist laboratories and build your scientific research skills working alongside a member of staff to research an area of personal interest or address a practical conservation question. You will learn with a course team who are internationally recognised experts in their field, with research strengths including ecology and conservation, human-wildlife interactions, zoonotic disease, behaviour, ecosystems and environmental management, and marine ecology.
