Undergraduate Research Internship – Computing


Events held in October and February offer opportunities for students seeking internships to network with company representatives. Students in the MECOP program will be entered into a pool of students for industry members to pick draft style. Students in the program typically spend an extra year in school to make up the two terms missed during their internships. During your internship you will have a mentor to guide you through the internship and conduct performance reviews at the midpoint and end of each internship.

At the end of your internship, you will also put together a summary presentation to give to the company and to future MECOP students. Finally, a report is also required at the end of each internship to detail what you did for the company and what you have learned. The Center provides software development, testing and hosting solutions for Oregon State partners and external clients, such as the Apache Software Foundation, the Linux Foundation, the Oregon Department of Transportation and Fortune companies.

Positions are 20 hours a week year-round, typically for two years, allowing students to continue taking classes while gaining real-world experience working with clients. Students work directly with a professional mentor, and are engaged in all aspects of software engineering as well as DevOps operations, including managing and configuring servers and services for some of the world's most important open source projects. Positions include: developer, community systems administrator, systems development engineer, test engineer.

Interns work in directly with industry and Oregon State clients to develop a prototype device. Unlike other internships, students craft the vision of the project. Students are hired to work on a specific project in small, interdisciplinary teams. The client provides the basic idea and the students design the solution including evaluating the market and existing technology, coming up with the best approach and building the prototype.

Students participate in all phases of a project: requirements gathering, application design, development, testing, delivery, hosting and support of industrial strength applications. Professional staff provides ongoing mentoring and training in software development, testing and system administration best practices. Students interact directly with clients and develop an understanding and appreciation for the business side of software engineering and application hosting and support. 3 Computer Science Internships (1-4 Months) in Europe

Interns will work closely with a faculty, postdoc, or grad student mentor on an original cognitive science research project. They will gain experience in developing the project, collecting data, and analyzing the results. In addition to their individual projects, interns will attend a weekly seminar with such topics as reading a scientific paper, introduction to the R data analysis platform, statistics and visualization, and presentation skills. The program will culminate with each intern presenting their work to an interdisciplinary audience. The topical focus of the program will be on language, learning, computation, and cognition, with an emphasis on giving students the technical skills they need to complete an independent project. Mentors will be from different departments across Stanford; the following PIs and labs participated last year see links to learn more about the research conducted in these labs :. This is an interdisciplinary summer program, and we encourage students from a wide range of majors to apply. Previous research experience is not required.

An internship is a short-term position that provides students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with professionals in a field related to their major. Most science and engineering internships are paid. Internships are available at private corporations, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations.

Internships are a very effective way to gain real-life experience and make connections to programs, materials, and classes at the College.

CSE Tech Talks, such as this visit by Facebook, are great opportunities to meet potential internship sponsors in person. We encourage students to gain hands-on, real-world experience by taking internships at companies related to their majors. Approved students who are in good standing with the department may earn academic credit for internships. To receive academic credit for an internship, follow the procedure described below.
