Online Public Classics Archive Classics has had a strong presence in the press. Jenkins , yet it is currently difficult to search for and document the places where that engagement takes place.

In order to document the great collective impact that our discipline has had and continues to have on public ways of thinking, we have created the Online Public Classics Archive, a public media Classics database that archives and organizes the public media engagement with antiquity on the Internet.

This e-resource is linked to the way we search on the Internet. But what if one wants to find out how many times reporters, columnists, bloggers, and other public writers have discussed Epictetus from ? On a daily basis we see many of these articles circulating on social media but they often end up sitting alone and abandoned as bookmarks or downloaded PDFs only on our own computers.

Our database succeeds in providing a space that is searchable by keywords and tags and can be filtered by date for both Classicists and the public to examine just how much of an impact the ancient world has had on contemporary thought. Though it is currently in the initial stages of development, it is already clear that a substantial body of public scholarship discussing antiquity has a robust and important presence in public discourse.

The Online Public Classics Archive collects articles from across the internet and from a variety of media sources. The views expressed in these media are those of the authors and their publishers, and are not endorsed in any way by the Paideia Institute. However, the Paideia Institute Institute strongly condemns hateful language or attitudes directed at individuals or groups based upon their nationality, race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation.

We welcome anyone with an interest in ancient Greece and Rome, and strive to create a learning environment in which individuals can pursue that interest without being demeaned or attacked for who they are. As a result, articles which use the Classics to attack individuals or groups for their identity or beliefs are not included in the archive.

The egyptologist Georg Steindorff: A heritage in letters and its scientific exploration The self-reflexion of a discipline is always a reflection of the consciousness of the timedependence of scientific research too.

The possibility of a substantiated description of historical science cultures stands and falls admittedly with suitable, sufficient explicit and complex source-situations. Archive documents are not of interest because of their anecdotal statement, the quality always depends much more on the possibility of a many-sided view, which allows a control of the studies. These aspects obtain outstanding importance, if biographies with a good situation of proofs bridge big breaks of history.

Georg Steindorff is born in in the Duchy of Anhalt to a Jewish family of the middle class in Dessau. He evolves into a typical representative of the dynamic pioneers in the time of the Second Industrial Revolution in the German Empire and maintains friendly contact with the royal family of Saxony. For a membership in the First World War he is already too old. Steindorff already converted to Protestantism during his studies in the 80ies of the Century, but due to his Jewish origin he soon comes to the fore of the national-socialist race ideology.

This archive is intended to act as a supplement to the dictionary, fulfilling several functions as described below. It is up-dated periodically, about once a year. Proposals are welcomed for improvements and additional entries address below. Where these are adopted, they will be appropriately attributed and dated. In the preparation of the dictionary, the pressure of time made it impossible to take full account of all the material in the reviews of the two dictionaries and in the AfO listings, although a fair amount was incorporated from these sources.

An attempt will be made here to remedy this, and also to revise any letters which have since appeared in CAD from R onwards. Reviews of the CDA will also be taken into account. Eventually, the material on this website will hopefully feed into a second edition of the dictionary, so that the website functions as a rolling preview of the second edition. AI is everywhere right now: in our news feeds, our devices, our homes. While business leaders may know AI needs a mindset shift to get the most out of the technology, communicating what exactly needs to change is challenging. We are looking to rapidly add features and data sets that will be relevant for: Scientific researchers building models of the pandemic and its impacts. Public Health and Safety authorities sourcing the best practices from around the world. Clinical researchers working on new therapies or vaccine trials, as well as identifying existing therapies that could provide immediate help. Other data scientists searching for novel ways to connect research across the body of knowledge available on coronavirus If this is you, please go to www. Though each application of AI differs from business to business and country to country, there are often similar patterns and concerns that arise, like the fear of automation replacing jobs and of increasing inequalities. Policy makers across the globe are trying to tackle these concerns to ensure they are creating a positive outcome for all. This week we have two guests who are going to teach us about how AI is impacting growth and a radical new approach in Japan to guiding science and innovation.

Cairns Douglas l. In any discussion of the norms and ideals of leadership in Homer, Odysseus inevitably looms large ; though his role, for much of the poem, is as able advisor and lieutenant, his qualities all shed light on the ideals of leadership and kingship that the poem presents to its audiences. These are ideals that in turn inform both the kingship ideology of the Odyssey and later Greek and Roman responses to Homeric kingship. Gaia 18, , p.

Quatre traducteurs de l'Iliade English Translations of Homeric E After a preamble in English dactylic hexametres, the translator of the Odyssey and the Iliad , two texts which accompanied his life and his travels, reflects on his work and method. In the tradition of Longfellow, whose poems became familiar to him starting from the age of 13, he shaped an accentual dactylic hexametre. He tried to retain authentic spondees and a genuine quantitative force in the syllables of his verse.

In his Parallele des Anciens et des Modernes , Charles Perrault stages a dialogue between "le President," a learned defender of antiquity, and two advocates of the superiority of the Moderns, "le chevalier" a nobleman and an abbot. The President, in turn, defends each item with erudite references to authorities The abbot then announces to his companions that he has a better means of evaluating Homer's poetry: translating into prose three purple passages the descriptions of the Greek army, of Achilles's shield, and of Alcinous's gardens and comparing them with a prose rendering of celebrated modern epic poems There is no further mention of this comparative analysis until Perrault's preface to the next: volume of his Parallele, in which he admits abandoning the comparison "pour l'amour de la Paix" "for the love of Peace"; Nevertheless, the reader still gets an idea of the project as the three characters resume their quarrel and the abbot reads aloud his literal prose translation of the beginning of the Iliad to prove Homer's lack of harmony

A short summary of Homer's The Iliad. This free synopsis covers all the crucial plot points of The Iliad.

Tsagalis Christos

Usually considered to have been written down circa the 8th century BC, the Iliad is among the oldest extant works of Western literature , along with the Odyssey , another epic poem attributed to Homer, which tells of Odysseus 's experiences after the events of the Iliad. It is usually grouped in the Epic Cycle. Set during the Trojan War , the ten-year siege of the city of Troy Ilium by a coalition of Mycenaean Greek states Achaeans , it tells of the battles and events during the weeks of a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles.

This all-encompassing spectacle marked a decisive moment in the history of the genre, at the very least as a bold synthesis of contemporary poetical and operatic practices. The theme of the opera is love thwarted by hatred between two nations, the love between Achilles, the Greek hero and king, and the Trojan princess Polyxena. The opera is thus a harmonious combination, not just of theatre, music and dance, but also homo- and hetero-eroticism, the heroic morality of the ideal prince, and the praise of peace between peoples. The method followed is transdisciplinary and aims especially at highlighting, behind and beyond the rhetoric of praise, the extremely dense network of intertextual, musical, choreographic and theatrical allusions which this opera comprises and which, taken as a whole, make it possible to characterize the styles of Campistron and Collasse. In this opera, the Iliad was combined with a post-Homeric myth treated by Dictys, narrating the passion of Achilles for the Trojan princess Polyxena.

Rejecting romance, Barker revisits the Trojan war through the prism of World War One, with uncanny rawness.
