At the interface of engineering and medicine, bioengineering is an inherently interdisciplinary field with societal impact. This student is viewing a microscope image of human airway smooth muscle cells stained with fluorescent calcium dye as part research to improve treatment for asthma. Innovation is furthered with an interdisciplinary collaborative lab environment and state-of-the-art facilities such as the Microscope Hub in the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex where this student is looking at cancer culture. With a square foot makerspace including 18 tables and state-of-the-art equipment, undergraduate students have the space, capabilities, and environment to work and innovate together on capstone, research, and teaching projects.

School of Science and Engineering. Approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education, this Joint Education Programme between the University of Dundee and the Northeastern University will allow you to study in both China and Dundee, where you will learn how to use engineering principles to solve medical and biological problems whilst gaining an appreciation for different cultures.
You will spend the first three years of your degree studying in China, at the Northeastern University, before completing your fourth year here at the University of Dundee. Throughout the first three years, you will partly be taught by staff from the University of Dundee.
This will allow you to have access to the same learning experience we offer here in Dundee, whilst studying in China. Your course will consist of both taught core components and intensive research training. You will learn to solve a variety of engineering challenges in the medical field, whilst also learning about the operating environments where these technologies are expected to function. We have a strong link between hospital, industry and translational medical research, so you will gain valuable real-life hospital experience.
We also offer a combination of both clinical and surgical aspects of medical imaging. Graduating with both a degree from the Northeastern University and the University of Dundee, you will be able to enter a wide range of medical related industries, clinical environments or professional biomedical research programmes. A common perception of biomedical engineering BME undergraduates is that they struggle to find industry jobs upon graduation. While some statistics support this concern, students continue to pursue and persist through BME degrees. This persistence may relate to graduates' other career interests, though limited research examines where BME students go and why. Scholars are also pushing for research that examines engineering careers in a broader context, beyond traditional industry positions. This study adds to that conversation by asking: How do BME students describe their career interests and perceived job prospects in relation to why they pursue a BME degree?

However, gathering evidence to support this model is severely hampered because it is nearly impossible to observe cells in the act of producing matrix while observing the collagen fibril deposition directly at the nanoscale but we sure are trying to do that in the lab.
