But it didn't last. To explain why, the tour takes us to streets that, Frazier says, "come alive at night" with people buying and selling drugs. This is where he lost his career and his marriage and ended up in jail.
He has cleaned up his life. He has a job, working for a collection agency started by someone he once mentored. When he returns to the streets now, it's to talk to people there.
When he goes to a homeless shelter, it's to help serve a holiday meal. These are some of the reasons why he became a part of the mayor's anti-crime initiative. He comes at the city's problems from a different perspective. The announcements on the buses were his idea. He figured some of the people they need to reach don't drive, they ride buses. He isn't naive. He knows a second recording isn't going to stop violent crime. But he figures, like the Jacksonville Journey, it's a step in the right direction.
The mayor has taken some heat for not including more people in the Jacksonville Journey from some of the most affected areas. Frazier defends the initiative. He says it is bringing people together, sparking dialogue. I don't care. All I want them to do is to vote for Jacksonville, to vote for a real effort to stop mothers and fathers from crying because their children are dying.
We're headed to the Sherwood Forest area, a neighborhood that isn't immune to violent crime but isn't the hotbed of it, either. When he points to a side street and says that's where he lives, you think that's why we're here. But we continue straight on Sibbald Road. And before reaching the next block, we pass a police car and a TV truck parked in front of a house - the scene of a double slaying.
Around the corner? You talk about a sobering effect. His best friend was murdered a couple of years ago. Now this. Two more young men. Right around the corner. And we can do it if we don't act like crabs in a pot and fight to pull each other down. We need to work together. As we head back toward downtown, I keep thinking about that moment on Sibbald Road.
