My goal is to develop a new treatment using lower dose antenatal steroids for women at risk of preterm delivery. One of my groundbreaking discoveries is identifying the pharmacology of surfactant and its components in the preterm lung. I have been a physician and researcher for more than 40 years. I was an associate editor for the Journal of Pediatrics for 18 years. Lung maturation and lung injury in the fetus and newborn; use of antenatal corticosteroids; lung injury with ventilation of the preterm.

Early caffeine and weaning from mechanical ventilation in preterm infants: a randomized, placebo-controlled trial. J Pediatr. Patients : [1] Inclusion criteria: Infants between 23 and 30 weeks of gestational age, who required mechanical ventilation in the first 5 days of life [2]. Exclusion criteria: Any infant with a major congenital anomaly and small-for-gestation infant were excluded. Randomization was stratified by the gestational age group or weeks.

We performed retrospective analyses of data from patients receiving off-label use of exogenous natural surfactant during the COVID pandemic. Patients were matched with 14 comparable subjects receiving supportive care for ARDS during the same time period. Feasibility and safety were examined as well as the duration of mechanical ventilation and mortality. Patients showed no evidence of acute decompensation following surfactant installation into minor bronchi. Cox regression showed a reduction of days mortality within the surfactant group, though not significant.

Eric is fond of telling the students involved in these productions that being in a show is like being in a family and he is proud to call all of these students and staff members that he has worked with over the years a part of his family. This show especially brings that point home.
