The current pandemic situation has given us the impetus to look again at different ways of delivering veterinary support and skills to conservationists saving endangered species. We need to develop our training skills and invest in new technologies that replicate the success of the Wild Tiger Health Centre. You are the missing piece of the puzzle. Veterinarians working as conservationists are classified into the field of Conservation Medicine. This field also overlaps with many other areas such as human medicine, biology, zoology, ecology, etc. As a veterinarian who has been lucky enough to study a semester of Conservation Medicine at university, I would like to give you an insight into how this overlap between conservation and veterinary medicine works. So, what job opportunities are there for veterinarians working in conservation? This seems to be the most obvious association when thinking of a veterinarian working as a conservationist. As this is the job I have had the least personal experience with, I have asked a fellow student of mine, Nicole Diana Wolf, to describe how she has experienced the work with a wildlife veterinarian and its relevance to conservation. There are lots of good jobs with animals, whether you want to go to university or start work as soon as possible. Many involve being physically active and going outdoors in all weathers, but some allow you to stay warm and dry. Vets can work with pets, farm animals and animals in zoos. You often need A grades in your A levels or Scottish Highers to get a place. Your subjects should include biology and at least one other science subject or maths — different universities ask for different combinations.
