The physics department encourages all majors to become involved with research before they graduate. The usual way to become associated with a research group on campus is to make arrangements directly with one of the faculty members. Descriptions of physics faculty research interests can be found on the faculty pages. Students may also wish to consider research with faculty in the School of Applied and Engineering Physics, or other departments in the physical sciences or engineering. Anyone interested in advice about finding a suitable research position is encouraged to consult with the Director of Undergraduate Studies in physics.

REU Program
The Lunar and Planetary Institute LPI invites undergraduates with at least 50 semester hours of credit to experience research in the planetary sciences.
The Summer Intern Program allows participants to experience a real research environment, to learn from top-notch lunar and planetary scientists, and to preview careers in science. The week program runs from June 2 to August 8, This program places students in paid internships in Science and Engineering at any of several Department of Energy facilities.
Many of the participants in the program have decided on a career in science and engeineering because of the nature of the experience. Studnets work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduate students supported with the NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its posessions.
The LARSS program is a week summer internship at NASA Langley Research Center LaRC that benefits rising undergraduate juniors and seniors, and graduate students who are pursuing degrees in auronautical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, computer science, atmospheric science, astrophysics, physics, chmistry or selected aerospace disciplines of interest to LaRC. Fermilab selects approximately fifteen college students to participate in the Summer Internships in Science and Technology SIST program each year to help us develop a richer understanding of the fundamental properties of matter.
This internship program has been developed to familiarize select college students with opportunities at the frontier of scientific research and to provide experiences that support their choice of science as a career.
Interns receive a salary related to the class level that has been completed before coming to Fermilab. These organizations utilize the energy and diversity of aspiring students and contribute to t heir professional developement though meaningful assignments, both relevant to teh institution's programs and in the advancement of physics or allied sciences.
Participating organizations also assign one or more mentors to guide the interns' work and overall experience. Students have an opportunity to contribute to the Laboratory's mission while working with state-of-the-art equipment and instruments. The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospherics Sciences at Oregon State University is proud to announce the availability of paid summer undergraduate research internships in geology, oceanography, and atmospheric and climate science. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the Research Experience for Undergraduates REU program offers students the unique opportunity to work on individual research projects, and participate in group field trips, seminars and science colloquia over a nine week period at CEOAS under the guidance of university scientists, who serve as mentors. Successful applicants receive paid round-trip travel to Oregon, on-campus housing for the duration of the internship, and a weekly stipend. CEOAS offers a broad range of undergraduate research opportunities and engineering applications in the physics, chemistry, geology, and biology of the Earth, oceans, and atmosphere. CEOAS research areas include ocean ecology, biogeochemistry, geomicrobiology, fisheries oceanography, physical oceanography, autonomous ocean observing, atmospheric science, climate modeling, marine geology, sedimentology, paleoclimatology, and geophysics.
